Chapter Twenty-Seven

I opened my eyes sleepily, not completely sure what had awakened me until my tired eyes took in Maddox leaning above me.

“I gotta go, babe, I’ll call you later,” he whispered before pressing a kiss against my lips.

“Okay,” I yawned as I pulled my white feather comforter up to my chin.

The smile found my face naturally as he grabbed his things and closed the door silently behind him.

“Stop grinning!” Kera’s voice was gruff with sleepiness.

“I’m sorry!” I pulled up my comforter a little higher to hide my lips.

“Is this really my life?” she frowned, while dramatically throwing her covers off.

Needless to say, she hadn’t taken Maddox’s observations on Giovanni’s flamboyance very well. At first, she’d argued that it was just his personality, but after some hindsight reflection she started to see things a little more clearly.

“At least you didn’t put the moves on him and get shot down,” I offered.

“True. But seriously, how do I go out on two dates with a guy and not realize that he’s not into women?”

“If it makes you feel any better I didn’t realize it right away either.”

Our intercom buzzing interrupted us.

“Maddox forget something?” Kera asked as I fumbled my way out of covers and to the intercom.

“Hey Becca, it’s Chad.”

Instead of answering I turned and gaped at Kera.

“Are you guys supposed to be working on your project?” Kera got up from her bed and went to her closet to put something on.

“At”—I turned and squinted at Kera’s alarm clock—“ten am? No!”

Without saying a word, I hit the buzzer allowing him to enter the building. I grabbed a hoodie, shuffled my slippers on my feet and headed downstairs, still not sure if I was actually going to entertain the idea of starting this project.

“Good morning, sunshine.” The hot cup of coffee he held out to me outshined Chad’s overly zealous smile.

“What’s going on?” I asked as I pulled the sides of my sweatshirt together.

“Thought we’d get a jump start on our project.”

Urgh. He was way too cheerful and the coffee was his only saving grace.

“Alright.” I turned and headed back to the elevator, not waiting to see if he was following me and not really caring either way.

“Not a morning person?” Chad nudged my side with his elbow.

“Ha.” I rolled my eyes not even trying to make that laugh sound genuine.

“Kera, we have company,” I announced as soon as I opened the door to our room, and allowed Chad to follow me in.

“I’m just going to change clothes real quick.” I grabbed some clothes out of my closet and snuck into the bathroom.

Kera, damn her, made her exit as soon as I came back, leaving Chad and me alone. I took a seat cross-legged on my bed while he sat at my desk next to me.

“So … what about Zack?” My brain clearing enough to question the obvious.

Chad tapped his pen against his mouth. “Well, I know you’ve been having a hard time with the class so I thought you and I could get a head start.
